Oxford Innovation

Information for Schools & Students

The Design Challenge is a competition brought to you by the Silverstone Innovation Centre, at the Silverstone race circuit, in collaboration with an experienced Design & Technology teacher (Darren Giles from the National School, Nottingham). The competition is open to all students attending schools in the UK between the ages of 11 and 18.

The format of the competition lends itself to either incorporation into existing Design Technology work or within an extra-curricular club (such as Young Engineers) due to it being based around the traditional design process.

The competition involves responding to one of the five different design challenges in either groups of 2-4 students, or individually, by creating a design project (max 3 teams per school unless by special arrangement). Students will work together to investigate and research into the challenge, develop ideas and concepts and finally present their ideas to a group of judges on a competition day, part of which involves a ‘Dragons Den’ type presentation!
